Throat tissues and muscles tend to relax during sleep. This results in airway blockages, loud snoring, and interrupted sleep. According to Dr. Steven Greenman, this can lead to daytime sleepiness and a host of other serious health issues. If your patients are experiencing any of these symptoms, there may be a solution. Inspire therapy helps control the body’s natural breathing, effectively treating obstructive sleep apnea.
Inspire therapy
Inspire is an implant that is placed through a simple outpatient procedure. Patients use a remote control to turn on the device every night to sync it with natural breathing and address the root causes of sleep apnea. Sensors detect when the patient inhales and prevents blockage of the airway to ensure quality sleep. Contact our DSM Solutions team for more information about how Inspire therapy can benefit your patients.
How does it work?
Inspire therapy works similarly to a pacemaker. Two wires or leads are connected to a generator. One of the leads will sense the patient’s inhalations. The other provides a mile stimulation to nudge the tongue forward a bit. This prevents the airway from collapsing. The end result is the patient gets a restful night of sleep.
Who qualifies for the therapy?
Generally, patients who do not benefit from typical CPAP therapy and the associated processes are candidates for Inspire. However, patients need to undergo a sleep study before a referral for Inspire.
